Niue is situated in the South Pacific
Ocean in the heart of Polynesia and a short flight from New
Zealand. A coral island twenty three kilometres (fourteen miles)
long and sixteen kilometres (ten miles) wide, it has a
population of 2,531 composed of mostly mixed Polynesians and
Melanesians. The island exports copra, sweet potatoes, and
bananas as well as woven goods.
Niue is a self governing nation under the
authority of the Niue Constitution Act 1974. It is a British
Commonwealth Associate Member and enjoys the protection of the
British Crown. The official language is English.
Niue enjoys political stability, and in
addition to its very favourable International Business Companies
Act, the Niue Government has also enacted comprehensive
legislation and regulations regarding Niue Development Bonds;
Trust/ Trustee Companies; Banks/Off-Shore Banking; and Offshore
Insurance Matters. Niue’s planned tourism industry is also
developing steadily, and plans for major airport extensions
should be initiated shortly.
